Alpacas . . . .

Alpacas are gentle, curious animals that belong to the camelid family.  Their cashmere-like fleece was once reserved for Incan royalty, but is now enjoyed by spinners and weavers worldwide.

There are two types of alpacas, Suri and Huacaya.  The Huacaya alpacas have fiber that is very dense and posses a crimp that makes it easy to spin.

Suri alpacas have fiber that hangs from them in locks.  Suri fiber is a beautiful fiber, but a little more difficult to spin.

The average height of an alpaca is 4 1/2 feet and the average weight is 150 pounds.  Alpaca babies (called cria) weigh approximately 15 pounds at birth.  There are 22 natural colors of alpaca fiber and many combinations.
