Llamas . . . .
Llamas also belong to the camelid family. The camelid family consists of Vicunas, Guanocos, Llamas and Alpacas. Referred to collectively, as "lamas". The spellling with one "l" is a reference to llamas and alpacas. The Incas used llamas primarily as beasts of burden. Today, llamas are used as pack animals, livestock guards, fiber production, showing and cart driving. A llama cria (baby) will weigh anywhere from 18 - 40 pounds at birth, with the average being 28 pounds. A full grown llama averages 5 1/2 feet tall and 300 pounds. Although llamas were not originally bred as fleece animals, they do provide a beautiful fleeces which can be every bit as soft and wonderful as many alpaca fleeces. |
